Natural Sleep Remedy That Works Writer #1, 2019-04-28 Finding that perfect night’s sleep is vital to happiness and health. Perhaps you can get away with one night of bad sleep, but when it’s chronic it can rip down your health and sanity, piece by piece. Over time, you begin to think that you have other independent health problems, but really they are just manifestations of sleeping poorly. Personally, I have been waking up at about 4am (not out of choice) feeling tired and needing a lot more sleep, but unable to sleep. Or perhaps getting another hour of sleep, but never enough to feel completely rested. Then, coffee wires me up until mid-afternoon and then the crash comes. Having tried all of the typical sleep remedies such as melatonin, valarian root, kava, theanine, hops, chamomile, lemon balm, etc., it dawned on me that I used to take honey before bed and I had suspected that it helped me sleep. Even though it’s contrary to my usual stance against excess sugar, I had about 1/2 tablespoon before bed. The first night I briefly woke up at 2:55am, but went right back to sleep until about 6:00 am. The second night I slept right through to 6:00 am and even still felt very relaxed, possibly able to sleep more, but rested. At the moment, my belief is that honey before bed is a great sleep aid. The beauty of it is that it doesn’t force you into a sleep coma or make you drowsy. It’s just food. But it’s food that seems to support your body’s sleep cycle, so after falling asleep you can stay asleep. For the record, I continued taking Theanine at bedtime. Theanine seems to help my ability to fall asleep. UPDATE: Last night I skipped the Theanine and just took a tablespoon of honey. I slept just as well. I woke up briefly at 5:00 am but fell back asleep and continued sleeping 6:10 am. My alarm had to wake me up, which is very unusual for me. This continues to be a success.
