Two Factor?

Is it really considered two factor authentication when I’m on my phone trying to access my bank account and my bank sends a text message to that same phone?

What are they protecting me from? Cyber hackers who can bypass all security measures on my phone but who are too dumb to open text messages?

I don’t really get it.
