Logitech Trackball Failure and Fix

OK, I admit it. I use a trackball mouse. Do you know how much your wrist can hurt if you use a normal mouse for 8+ hours per day?!

Well, recently my Logitech M570 trackball mouse decided to stop working. It was somewhat random and unexpected. It’s just over a year old and I certainly don’t abuse it, so why would it do this to me?

I tried replacing the old battery with a new one. When that didn’t work I tried yet another new battery, because hey, new batteries could be defective. Maybe. But that didn’t help, either.

Soon, I started believing that I would have to get a new one, “But perhaps this one is under warranty”, I thought, so I went to the Logitech website. I noticed something called “Logitech Unifying Software”. After downloading and running it, it asked me to power off my device and power it back on. So I did. Suddenly, the mouse arrow started moving. It’s alive!

Yes, this handy little mouse has been brought back from the dead. Why it died to begin with, I may never know. But right now, everything is right again.

UPDATE

I was so wrong. That did not fix the mouse, although it is working now. The Unifying Software makes one USB receiver connect to multiple devices, so yes, my mouse now works, but that’s only because it’s connecting through my keyboard receiver. Essentially, I’ve proven that my USB receiver for the mouse is bad. Either way, I’m up and running.
